SUMMARY:Black History Month
DESCRIPTION:In 1915\, in response to the lack of information on the accomplishments of Black people available to the public\, historian Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. In 1926\, the group declared the second week of February as “Negro History Week” to recognize the contributions of African Americans to U.S. history. Few people studied Black history and it wasn’t included in textbooks prior to the creation of Negro History Week. \nThis week was chosen because it includes the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass\, an abolitionist (someone who wanted to end the practice of enslaving people)\, and former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln led the United States during the Civil War\, which was primarily fought over the enslavement of Black people in the country. Many schools and leaders began recognizing the week after its creation. \nThe week-long event officially became Black History Month in 1976 when U.S. president Gerald Ford extended the recognition to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Black History Month has been celebrated in the United States every February since. \nClick here for Black History Month lessons and resources from NEA.

SUMMARY:Music in Our Schools Month
DESCRIPTION:For nearly 40 years\, March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®)\, the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools and communities across the nation. \nThe purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community\, and to display the value that school music brings to students of all ages. \nMIOSM and the events surrounding it are the ideal opportunities for increasing awareness of the benefits of high-quality music education programs in our nation’s schools. NAfME hopes that teachers\, students\, and music supporters alike will find ways to join the celebration through creative activities and advocacy. \nFor more information\, visit the National Association for Music Education website.

SUMMARY:Womens History Month
DESCRIPTION:Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7\, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years\, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project\, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994\, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995\, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.

SUMMARY:Pi Day
DESCRIPTION:Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi\, talk to their friends about math\, and eat pie.\nPi has been calculated to over 50 trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number\, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations\, pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize\, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

SUMMARY:César Chávez Day
DESCRIPTION:On Cesar Chavez Day\, we celebrate one of America’s greatest champions for social justice. Raised into the life of a migrant farm worker\, he toiled alongside men\, women\, and children who performed daily\, backbreaking labor for meager pay and in deplorable conditions. They were exposed to dangerous pesticides and denied the most basic protections\, including minimum wages\, health care\, and access to drinking water. Cesar Chavez devoted his life to correcting these injustices\, to reminding us that every job has dignity\, every life has value\, and everyone — no matter who you are\, what you look like\, or where you come from — should have the chance to get ahead.

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Visibility
DESCRIPTION:Each year on March 31\, the world observes Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) to raise awareness about transgender people. It is a day to celebrate the lives and contributions of trans people\, while also drawing attention to the poverty\, discrimination\, and violence the community faces. \nInternational TDOV was created in 2010 by trans advocate Rachel Crandall. Crandall\, the head of Transgender Michigan\, created TDOV in response to the overwhelming majority of media stories about transgender people being focused on violence. She hoped to create a day where people could re-focus on celebrating the lives of transgender people\, empowering them to live authentically\, while still acknowledging that due to discrimination\, not every trans person can or wants to be visible. \nClick here for more information.
