CEA, NEA Announce Endorsement of Amie Baca-Oehlert for CD8

Denver, COThe Colorado Education Association (CEA) and the National Education Association (NEA) today announced their recommendation of Amie Baca-Oehlert for Congressional District 8.

“Amie Baca-Oehlert has spent her entire career fighting for students, educators and strong public schools,” said Kevin Vick, educator of 20-plus years and president of CEA. “As a teacher, a union leader, and a tireless advocate, she’s never backed down from doing what’s right for Colorado’s families. To get better results out of Washington, we need to elect people who’ve taken a different path than the one worn down by career politicians. I can’t think of a stronger voice to represent CD8. Amie knows what it takes to lead with integrity, compassion and conviction, and she’ll bring the same courage to Congress that she brought to classrooms and the Capitol. CEA is proud to recommend her.”

Amie Baca-Oehlert previously served as the president of CEA for six years, from 2018 to 2024. During her tenure as president, she led CEA, the state’s largest union, and its nearly 40,000 members through challenges such as chronic underfunding and the pandemic. During her tenure, Baca-Oehlert fiercely advocated for more funding for public schools, increased mental health supports for students and educators and increased school safety measures. During the last year of her presidency, she played a vital role in eliminating the Budget Stabilization Factor (B.S. Factor), which led to public schools in Colorado being fully funded for the first time since the creation of the B.S. Factor in 2010. Prior to her presidency, she served as the president of the District Twelve Educators’ Association (DTEA) and then served for six years as the vice president of CEA. She was also a high school language arts teacher in Adams 14 school district and later a counselor in the Adams 12 school district.

“Amie Baca-Oehlert is a champion for America’s students and Colorado’s working families. As an educator and union leader, she has dedicated her life to helping her students thrive and strengthening her community. Amie is someone who knows how critical it is to ensure that every student – no matter their background, race or ZIP code – has access to quality public schools,” said National Education Association President Becky Pringle. “She is for expanding learning opportunities for our students and against diverting funding out of the public schools that 90 percent of our students attend into unaccountable and discriminatory private schools through vouchers. And Amie will continue working to level the playing field for working families, while getting things done to help students, educators, and communities across Colorado. That is why the National Education Association is proud to recommend our friend and colleague Amie Baca-Oehlert in her campaign for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District.”

“I am proud and honored to have earned the support of our union in my run for Congress,” said Congressional candidate and former CEA President Amie Baca-Oehlert. “I think this speaks to how hungry working families are to see more people like us — and less run-of-the-mill politicians — in Congress. I have fought for many years as a teacher and union leader to improve the lives of students, educators and our communities, and I’m ready to take that fight to Washington.”
